Office of Public Health Surveillance and Research (OPHSR)

Information for public health researchers

As part of the Public Health Strategic Health Care Group, the Office of Public Health Surveillance and Research (OPHSR) conducts public health surveillance and research within VA focusing on biosurveillance and Healthcare Associated Infections (HAI).

Surveillance and research initiatives include:

  • Health associated infections and biosurveillance
  • Characterization of organisms/infections of epidemiologic significance
  • Antimicrobial usage and resistance

Major collaborations within VA include Office of Research and Development, Patient Care Services (Infectious Disease Program Office, infection control programs and laboratory service). Outside collaborations include the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Department of Defense, Johns Hopkins University, and Stanford University.

In addition, OPHSR facilitates and provides regulatory oversight for VA investigators involved in HIV and Hepatitis C research projects using the Clinical Case Registry (CCR).
