Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS)

VA SARS Policies

VA employees should follow the guidance of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on triage of patients, management of exposure in health care settings, and infection control practices. Please see the CDC SARS web site for the most current and comprehensive information. VA clinicians evaluating patients with suspected SARS or caring for confirmed cases of SARS must report this to their VA hospital infection control practitioner, to their facility director, and to their VISN Director's office. Infection control practitioners should follow CDC guidance on reporting to local and state health departments and to CDC.

This SARS Plan is a working document that outlines the concepts and strategies that would guide the U.S. response in the event of a SARS outbreak. It also describes many of the activities needed at the federal, state, and local levels to prepare for and respond rapidly and decisively to a reemergence of SARS.
