As part of the Clinical Public Health group, Public Health Surveillance and Research conducts public health surveillance and research within VA focusing on biosurveillance and healthcare associated infections (HAI).
Surveillance and research initiatives include:
- Healthcare associated infections and biosurveillance
- Characterization of organisms/infections of epidemiologic significance
- Antimicrobial usage and resistance
Major collaborations within VA include Office of Research and Development, Patient Care Services (National Infectious Disease Service, infection control programs and laboratory service). Outside collaborations include the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Department of Defense, Johns Hopkins University, and Stanford University.
In addition, Public Health Surveillance and Research facilitates and provides regulatory oversight for VA investigators involved in HIV and hepatitis C research projects using the Clinical Case Registry (CCR).
