Public Health Surveillance and Research

As part of the Clinical Public Health group, Public Health Surveillance and Research conducts public health investigations and surveillance within the Veterans Health Administration (VHA).

Public health investigations

  • Provide subject matter expertise for evaluation of infectious disease exposure incidents
  • Conduct epidemiologic look-back investigations
  • Support needs of VHA investigations and epidemiologic testing through the Public Health Reference Laboratory


  • Development and maintenance of the Healthcare Associated Infections and Influenza Surveillance System (HAIISS) set of software tools for direct Veteran health care and situational awareness for VHA leadership and federal agency partners (e.g., Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Department of Defense)
    • Healthcare-associated infection detection and monitoring
    • Influenza (seasonal and epidemic/pandemic) and other emerging infectious disease syndromes
    • Monitoring of organisms/outbreaks of epidemiologic significance
    • Public health reportable disease detection and reporting
    • Monitoring antimicrobial usage and resistance patterns
