Surveillance Military Environmental Exposures

Surveillance Military Environmental Exposures (SMEE) is a division of VA’s Health Outcomes Military Exposures (HOME) program office. SMEE established and leads VA’s surveillance program to address the exposure concerns of Veterans. SMEE analyzes military environmental exposure and health-related data to inform healthcare and benefits policy. The SMEE team includes professionals with diverse expertise, including epidemiologists, biostatisticians, librarians, and policy analysts.

SMEE’s key activities include:

  • Providing rapid response to emerging military exposure issues that impact Veteran health
  • Performing health surveillance of Veteran cohorts with unique military environmental exposures
  • Leading scientific assessments and formal evaluations to help VA determine if certain health conditions qualify as presumptive conditions
  • Overseeing the Military Environmental Exposure Research Clearinghouse, as required by PACT Act Section 509
  • Providing military environmental exposure research library services for HOME studies
