National Academies Reports on Agent Orange
VA contracts with the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, a private, non-profit, non-governmental, and non-partisan organization, to scientifically review evidence on the long-term health effects of Agent Orange and other herbicides on Vietnam Veterans.
Independent committes of scientific experts determine whether the evidence points to a statistically valid association that would suggest or establish a relationship between health outcomes and diseases reviewed and exposure to the herbicides or their component chemcals.
National Academies Reports
National Academies released Veterans and Agent Orange: Update 11 (2018) in November of 2018 that specifically examined intergenerational effects from Agent Orange exposure in addition to all other health outcomes in the published scientific literature. That committee did not find evidence of intergenerational effects, including birth defects, in the descendants of Vietnam Veterans resulting from exposure to any of the herbicides or their components.
National Academies released Veterans and Agent Orange: Update 2014 in March of 2016.
National Academies released Post-Vietnam Dioxin Exposure in Agent Orange-Contaminated C-123 Aircraft on January 9, 2015. VA established qualification for benefits related to Agent Orange exposure for some Veterans due to this report.
VA continues to conduct research on the effects of Agent Orange and monitor the health issues of Vietnam War-Era Veterans.
