Tobacco Use Comorbidities

There are some health conditions associated with higher rates of tobacco use: psychiatric disorders, substance addiction, and HIV. These higher rates are seen in both the general U.S. population and among Veterans.

Integrated care

Recognizing the opportunity to address tobacco use among Veterans with these conditions in VA care, VA promotes the integration of tobacco cessation interventions in these specialized treatment settings.

Integrating tobacco cessation services such as screening, counseling, and medication in mental health and addiction treatment settings and HIV clinics improves the health of Veterans disproportionally affected by tobacco's negative effects.
