Pocket guide for clinicians
Helping Smokers Quit: A Guide for Clinicians (172 KB, PDF) This pocket guide was originally developed by Tobacco Free Nurses and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and has been revised for use by clinical providers in the VA health care system. The guide provides brief guidance on the 5 A's of smoking cessation counseling: Ask, Advise, Assess, Assist, and Arrange.

Evidence-Based Tobacco Use Treatments: A Resource for VHA Psychology Trainees (2.35 MB, PDF)
A 2-part presentation developed in 2012 by members of the Veterans Health Administration Technical Advisory Group for use in trainings with psychology and mental health professional trainees and staff on evidence-based smoking cessation treatment. The first part reviews guidance from the 2008 update of the U.S. Public Health Service Clinical Practice Guideline. The second part reviews smoking as a health disparity among mental health and addictive disorders populations and the evidence-base for smoking cessation treatment in these populations. Integrating Tobacco Cessation Treatment into Mental Health Care (4 MB, PDF)
VHA initiated a preceptorship training program for VHA mental health and substance use disorder providers in 2003 to address the need to improve access to effective tobacco cessation services for mental health patients. This volume summarizes the course content from faculty presentations delivered at the third and final preceptorship training conference in May 2006.
The training program was cosponsored by the VA Puget Sound Mental Illness Research, Education, and Clinical Center and the Center of Excellence in Substance Abuse Treatment and Education, and the Public Health Strategic Health Care Group and included the following core concepts:
