Integrating Tobacco Cessation Treatment into Mental Health Care (4 MB, PDF)
VHA initiated a preceptorship training program for VHA mental health and substance use disorder providers in 2003 to address the need to improve access to effective tobacco cessation services for mental health patients. This volume summarizes the course content from faculty presentations delivered at the third and final preceptorship training conference in May 2006.

The training program was cosponsored by the VA Puget Sound Mental Illness Research, Education, and Clinical Center and the Center of Excellence in Substance Abuse Treatment and Education, and the Public Health Strategic Health Care Group and included the following core concepts:

  • Evidence-based treatments for tobacco use
  • VA/DoD clinical practice guidelines
  • Tobacco use and treatment outcomes for smokers with mental health disorders
  • Systems change strategies for implementation of tobacco use treatment
