News reports from Columbia, Missouri to Contra Costa, California spotlight the rise of younger, women veterans, and the consequent shift at VA facilities nationwide.

  • The Contra Costa Times' Jan. 11 piece, "Women’s scars of war," notes: "Historically, female veterans have had a hard time accessing services because facilities aren't welcoming or because they didn't know the VA served them," according to one Palo Alto program director. "Due to the increase of women in the military — 20 percent of new recruits are female — initiatives are in place to boost programs tailored for women. As a result, the VA projects that the percentage of female patients they serve will double by the end of this year. Still, there are barriers." • In a Dec. 18 article, "VA adjusts to more women as patients," the Columbia Tribune reports: The [Truman VA] is responding to a new breed of veteran: young female patients seeking care after serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. And the women aren't just there to talk to doctors about an old war injury; they want Pap smears, breast exams and prenatal care." Read about what's happening at the Truman VA.*†
