Based on a review of the latest Institute of Medicine (IOM) report "Veterans and Agent Orange: Update 2010," VA has:
- Proposed to presume that early-onset peripheral neuropathy associated with herbicide exposure during service does not need to resolve within two years.
- Decided not to add further to the current list of diseases found to be related to herbicide exposure based on the available scientific evidence. Read the Federal Register notice to learn more.
VA contracts with the IOM of the National Academy of Sciences, a nongovernmental organization, to scientifically review evidence on the long-term health effects of Agent Orange and other herbicides on Vietnam Veterans. IOM determines whether the evidence points to a statistically valid association that would suggest or establish a relationship between diseases studied and herbicide use.
The next IOM report is expected to be released in October 2013.
VA continues to conduct research on the effects of Agent Orange and monitor the health issues of Vietnam War-Era Veterans.
