On September 29, 2011, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) released, "Veterans and Agent Orange: Update 2010," a review every two years of the long-term health effects of herbicides on Vietnam Veterans. VA is assessing this IOM report to determine whether there will be any changes to its policies.
VA contracts with the IOM of the National Academy of Sciences, a nongovernmental organization, to scientifically review evidence on the long-term health effects of Agent Orange and other herbicides on Vietnam Veterans. IOM determines whether the evidence points to a statistically valid association that would suggest or establish a relationship between diseases studied and herbicide use.
VA continues to conduct research on the effects of Agent Orange and monitor the health issues of Vietnam War-Era Veterans.
