Thirty VA Public Health Grants Awarded for 2006

The Public Health Strategic Health Care Group (PHSHG) of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announces that it has made 30 awards of $1,400 each through its 2006 Public Health Grants Program.

A wide array of public health projects were funded on topics that included smoking cessation, HIV/AIDS, influenza vaccination, hepatitis C, pandemic influenza, hand washing, and prevention of hospital-acquired pneumonias, among others. Formats of the projects include print materials, videos, education sessions, and interactive booths; and audiences are both new and established patients and various types of health professionals.  Settings range from urban to rural and from VA inpatient medical centers to VA outpatient clinics across the country.

The goal of the program is to encourage the development of VA education and prevention materials and programs on public health concerns such as HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, smoking cessation, health care-acquired infections, hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette. Grant funding can be used to develop educational materials and purchase supplies that increase patient awareness, to coordinate activities and events that improve provider training, and to establish screening and other initiatives that promote treatment adherence and healthy living with chronic conditions.

Funding was open only to VA health care providers and other VA employees in VA Medical Centers, VA Community-Based Outpatient Clinics, Domiciliaries, and Vet Centers and applications were reviewed based on such criteria as fit with the program goals, a clear description of the project, and identification of the VA target audience and relevance to the audience. Funds for this program come from unrestricted grants for educational purposes made to the Public Health Strategic Health Care Group from multiple pharmaceutical and diagnostic companies. The award funds cannot be used for certain purposes such as travel to conferences, salaries, honoraria, textbooks, journals, or payments to VA personnel.
